Huge 1,100sqm data centre to be built in Norwich Research Park by 2026 

Work will soon start on a huge new data centre in Norwich Research Park. The work will take several years, with one new data centre being completed by the beginning of 2026 and fully operational by the beginning of 2027. The new building will be more than 1,100sqm and will also be the home to a new combined heat and power facility. 

 

DigitalBridge Group to acquire Yondr Group 

In more news, DigitalBridge Group has announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire Yondr Group through one of its managed investment funds. The company has more than 420MW of capacity committed to hyperscalers, with significant additional lands for total capacity of over 1GW. Senior Managing Director at DigitalBridge stated, “Yondr enhances our existing data centre portfolio and strengthens our ability to support hyperscalers. Together, we are well-positioned to capitalise on the increase in demand for hyperscale data centres over in Italy. 

 

Amazon’s AWS to invest $1.3bn on data centres in Italy 

Amazon is to invest 1.3 billion in Italian data centres by 2029. The company said in a statement that the investment would support up to 5,500 jobs through 2029 across the AWS data centre supply chain. Jobs will range across construction, facility maintenance, engineering and telecommunications. I'm excited to see how this will affect the Italian market. 

  

atNORTH will expand ICE02 and ICE03 data centres in Iceland 

Over in the Nordics, atNORTH has announced a substantial expansion of two of its data centres in Iceland. The ICE02 campus will gain an additional capacity of 35MW, while the ICE03 campus will also gain an additional capacity of 16MW. Both sites will also have surplus space for further expansion in line with future demand. The CEO of atNORTH stated “we are experiencing considerable increase and interest in our highly energy efficient and sustainable data centres.” He also stated, we have power agreements and building permits in place and will meet this demand as part of our ongoing sustainable expansion strategy. 

 

Jones Engineering doubled in profits amid strong pickup in the Group’s overseas business 

Next up, Irish company Jones Engineering has reported in a doubling in profit amid a strong pick up in the group's overseas business. The mechanical contractor, which specialises in building large scale data centres and facilities for the life sciences sector, saw its profit after tax jump by 81% to 70.8 million last year, while revenue was down. The accounts show the company's profit margin increased to 8%, which is up from 4.9% previously. A very impressive performance from the Irish giant. 

 

Box2bit is building a new €3.4 billion facility 

More than 1,950 construction and operational jobs will be created as part of the project. News of the development was announced by the president of the local government who said it will be “transformative for the region” because “it will provide a clear added value to our economy and will strengthen prominent technology sector.” Box2bit was founded in 2021 and a year later, it announced it intended to spend €3 billion on building 2 data centres.
